Stability of hydrodynamical relativistic planar jets

2004

The effects of relativistic dynamics and thermodynamics in the development of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in planar, relativistic jets along the early phases (namely linear and saturation phases) of evolution has been studied by a combination of linear stability analysis and high-resolution numerical simulations for the most unstable first reflection modes in the temporal approach. Three different values of the jet Lorentz factor (5, 10 and 20) and a few different values of specific internal energy of the jet matter (from 0.08 to $60.0 c^2$) have been considered. Figures illustrating the evolution of the perturbations are also shown.

Quantum simulation of gauge potentials with cold atoms in optical lattices: a tunable platform for relativistic fermions and axions

2014

We offer here a brief introduction to the idea of quantum simulations with cold atomic gases, with focus on the recent efforts towards artificial gauge potentials and fields. This is mainly intended as a sort of “pedestrian guide” for people not yet working in the field, but curious to get a first contact with it; longer and deeper reviews are addressed for deeper details. As a special case, we focus here on reviewing some own previous contributions about a flexible toolbox based on bichromatic optical lattices and Raman assisted tunnelling. Such a scheme would allow good control on the mass and kinetic terms of a lattice Hamiltonian in different effective dimensions. If realized with fermi…

General Relativistic Dynamics of Irrotational Dust: Cosmological Implications

1994

The non--linear dynamics of cosmological perturbations of an irrotational collisionless fluid is analyzed within General Relativity. Relativistic and Newtonian solutions are compared, stressing the different role of boundary conditions in the two theories. Cosmological implications of relativistic effects, already present at second order in perturbation theory, are studied and the dynamical role of the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor is elucidated.

The form factor of the pion in point-form of relativistic dynamics revisited

2003

The electromagnetic form factor of the pion is calculated in the "point-form" of relativistic quantum mechanics using simple, phenomenological wave functions. It is found that the squared charge radius of the pion is predicted one order of magnitude larger than the experimental value and the asymptotic behavior expected from QCD cannot be reproduced. The origin of these discrepancies is analyzed. The present results confirm previous ones obtained from a theoretical model and call for major improvements in the implementation of the "point-form" approach.
